In the Summer of 1903, Fredrick C. Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes founded the American based glass company, Steuben Glass Works. The company was founded in Corning, NY where Hawkes was the owner of the largest cut glass firm. Carder, not of American descent but an Englishman, had many experiences designing in England for Stevens and Williams. With all of the purchasing of glass blanks from many distributors, Hawkes decided that he wanted his own factory to do the work himself. Carder decided to come to Corning after he was denied a promotion at Stevens and Williams. Hawkes also had a key role in the decision for Carder to come to Corning.  Read more »
