STEUBEN
In the Summer of 1903, Fredrick C. Carder and Thomas G. Hawkes founded the American based glass company, Steuben Glass Works. The company was founded in Corning, NY where Hawkes was the owner of the largest cut glass firm. Carder, not of American descent but an Englishman, had many experiences designing in England for Stevens and Williams. With all of the purchasing of glass blanks from many distributors, Hawkes decided that he wanted his own factory to do the work himself. Carder decided to come to Corning after he was denied a promotion at Stevens and Williams. Hawkes also had a key role in the decision for Carder to come to Corning.
In 1933, Steuben came out with a formula for crystal that would refract and reflect light like a prism would. Ever since they created that, their crystal has " illuminated everything it touches". In 1940, they were given the honor to exhibit 27 artists representing crystal design. Among these extraordinary artists were Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse and Georgia O'Keefe. After that exhibit, they made it a tradition. All of Steuben's pieces can add elegance and sophistication to your home, whether its a vase, candle stick or a collectible item.
